Jacob's First Pine Wood Derby

Scott and Jacob had a lot of fun making his pine wood derby car. In fact, it wasn't a "car" it was a tank. At first Jacob just wanted hi car to look like the one on the box, but then we showed him that it could be anything that he wanted it to be, so he decided he wanted a tank with a turret that actually turns. Scott had a blast figuring out how to design it and then they both made it. Jacob even did a little bit of the cutting on the scroll saw by himself!
Jacob's favorite part was the painting.
All done!
He wasn't doing very well with his races, so he decided to turn the turret so that it knocked the other car off the track. The leader didn't let him do it, though. He turned the turret back just enough to not interfere. After Jacob lost about his fifth race, I told him how Scott has a trophy with a turtle on it for being the slowest car in the race, so he is just like his dad! The very last race he got really excited because it pulled ahead in the decent, but then lost at the end. He was just excited that it was winning for a little while :) (It would have done better if Scott hadn't let Jacob nail in the wheels by himself, but Jacob really wanted to do it so the wheels were crooked), Oh well, tanks aren't really made for speed anyway. Next year they are going to make a race car.
They all got driver's license

I loved reading this! We also always let the boys do most of the work so the car was really theirs - and rarely did we have a winner! In Cottonwood the pack had to go to having a father's race. The Allreds would use actual car paint on theirs and wow were they shiny. The very first derby Tommy was in, I was a young leader that knew nothing of graphite or balancing the wheels and Dad had to work. When Rodney Mocasque's car didn't make it to the end of the track, he disappeared to cry(Native American boys are not supposed to cry). I felt so terrible and finally another den's father told my den about graphite. I'm just glad Scott and Jacob had fun creating his tank.

Looks like so much fun. Half of me is a little glad we only have one boy to go through scouts with. So much work!

I very much agree. We still haven't finnished his Bobcat that he was supposed to have done by August. Scouts just haven't been high on the priority list.
