Hi all, sorry it's been so long since we've posted. Wanted to give everyone an update on Khai's surgery. Everything went well and there were no surprises. We feel blessed to have one of the best (and very few) ENT doctors with expertise in Khai's type of hearing loss (X-linked stapes gusher). He had his follow-up appointment today and the doctor said everything was looking perfect.
He currently has about a 2.5 inch scar behind his left ear, but in about a year we won't even see it anymore. Plus, it will be covered by hair and his hearing device. The implant will be turned on at the end of this month (to allow for healing), then it's a dozen appointments over the next year to fine-tune the device and his hearing. We're optimistic it will help him hear better, and we'll let you know when that time comes.
Love you all!

So awesome! We are so glad everything went well and he is healing up.
Mark,
You failed to mention a couple of things you mentioned to me. Khai's type of hearing loss means that, even if the device works well, to Khai it will sound as if he were swimming under water. There's a high probability that, due to having to tie in close proximity to the nerve endings, that the device will not work at all. Pre-op, Khai had no hearing whatever in that ear, that the hearing aid battery on that side would discharge without Khai ever being aware of it. If the device helps at all, it will be a net gain over the nothing he has had essentially since birth. Mom and I continue to pray for him and to put his name on the Temple prayer roll consistently. We love you Son...and Van, Kelsey and Emily as well. Hope to see you when things eventually calm down on this end. Love you all. Dad
We have seen videos of this surgery and the results seem amazing! Happy he gets to try it.
We're keeping Khai in our prayers. Can't help but get our hopes up that he'll have some big hearing improvement, but even if it's small it's still an improvement. Love you guys!
Haha, Dad's unwavering optimism never ceases to amaze me :P I am his daughter, however, and appreciate the updates!! Planning on telling everyone how I have a bionic nephew now! :D How is the implant powered? How is Khai doing now that it's been awhile (I'm so slow at getting on here lately)? I hope all is well!! Love you guys, and can't wait to see you again at reunion!!
