I'm Published!!

Ok, well, not exactly. But my letter to the editor will be published in the upcoming issue of Hobby Farms! Shannon's mom paid for our subscription (was a fundraiser) and they had a very informative article on the shortage of large animal veterinarians. It didn't mention an important bit of information however, so I wrote in and told them about it. And I just found out that my letter will be in the next issue! Its really exciting, since they only publish 2-4 letters in each issue. And I won a $20 coupon to Nutrena, which I'll probably just give to Greg so he can get some dog food. Here is what I wrote:

As a full time student who will be applying soon to veterinary school, I found the article "An Endangered Breed" in the May/June issue VERY insightful. It is true, vet students amass massive debt, and going into small animal practice makes economic sense, since they make an average of $10,000 more per year. However, there have been programs instituted on both the federal and state level in many parts of the country to entice students to fill the gaps in the ranks of large animal vets. Most of these programs include debt forgiveness plans, where a certain percentage of the veterinarian ' s debt is paid off every year that they work as a large animal vet. In most cases, it only takes 5 years for the full $106,000 to be forgiven! So while yes, small animal vets make more money, they also live in debt for much longer.
Thank you for your thoughtful and useful articles. I look forward to every issue, and for me, 6 issues a year is not enough!

Its just a letter to the editor, but still, I think its so cool!

I think it's cool, too. My children have inherited their writing ability from Dad and my dad.I'm also proud of you for being concerned about debt at this stage of your life. Make sure you scan and email me the page when it comes out!
