Faith promoting experience
I don't know if any of you kids remember Uncle George Corf. He was married to Aunt Louise, Grandpa Bill Gibbons' sister. They were next-door neighbors and Uncle George lost his first wife. Luouise's 2 children liked George so much that they got their mother (she was divorced) and George, a widower together. They were married in 1960, he died in 1984.
I've always wondered about George's first wife. He is sealed to Aunt Louise, but I always have felt he'd want to be sealed to his first wife, too.
Sat morning I woke up thinking about Uncle George and this - I hadn't even thought of him in ages. Dad was having a Cub Scout meeting at the house, so I spent about 2 hours on the computer looking for the first wife's name. I checked the Church's site, and the ancestry.com free 1940 census site and found nothing.
While I was on the church's site (familysearch.com) a request to take a survey came up. As I took the survey, they wanted to know if I had used any other sites, and they listed 8 different sites. I wrote the sites down, but figured they all would cost money.
This morning I went back on the computer and decided to check out the sites. MyHeritage.com is free for some of its info. I put myself in and then on a whim, put George's name and date. Up popped the 1940 census with his name and his first wife's name. That was exciting enough, but they were at the top of the page and it said continued from block 2. It also said relationship to head of household, brother-in-law! On myheritage, I couldn't check other pages of the census. So I went back to the church site, put in Gertrude's name and it came up. Apparently the indexer had skipped George somehow.
The church site let's you go to the other pages - unfortunately I had to go through nearly all 44 pages because the census taker skipped around the neighborhood.
BUT the church's site also had Gertrude's death certificat with her parents' names. So now I knew her maiden name and when I found the right page, I found her brother, his wife, and their child, AND the wife's mother. Then when I put the brother's name in, I got the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, plus his death info.
I was so excited, I ran up to tell Dad and he said I wouldn't believe it but he had dreamed about Uncle George Friday night!
I went on new.familysearch and found the brother and parents entered, but not Unc George's wife or her other siblings. His work had not been done, nor his parents sealed. Generations back on the dad's side had the work finished. I didn't have time to check the mother's side.
Does Uncle George want to be sealed to his first wife? I'd say YES! Why would dad and I both out of the blue think of him?
I bear testimony that temple work is so important and that our family on the other side of the veil need us and are aware of us. Follow any promptings you receive!
Sorry this is so long, but I wanted a record of this spiritual experience. Love you all!

And I know, I'm officially an old woman because I have the time to do this genealogical research!
SOOOO cool! If that makes you an "old person," then I want to be old too so I can have these awesome experiences as well.
I love genealogy so stories like this are exciting to me.
That is really neat. Thanks for sharing Momma! Love you
That is such a cool experience, thank you for sharing it Mom!
Is it okay if I take this with me to my lesson on Sunday for Relief Society? It's on temple work, and if I feel prompted to share this, I would like to be able to :D
