So my dad, Rick, told me a great Veterans story today. There was this WW2 Vet who is now 80 years old. He moved to Kansas last year and while living there, he got in contact with a professor at Kansas University. He admitted that while he had lead a good life, he had never learned how to read. All his life he had struggled at jobs, and while co-workers helped him, he could never get above minimum wage with his limited abilities. This professor challenged him to come to his classroom 3 times a week for an hour. Even at his old age he committed to coming and now after 6 months he is reading at a 6th grade level. This old vet is so excited to be able to read a children's book and says that he is enjoying life more than ever! He reads stories all the time and has found the confidence to read to others in his community. Within the next year he plans to use some of his savings to go to some basic college classes and become a better reader.
I just thought this was so cool, that even someone who really doesn't need schooling anymore, or someone who has seen so much in his life, including a World War, that he can find such pleasure in reading a simple book! I am just glad that this professor took the time out of his day to make a Veterans life more enjoyable for however much longer that is. I hope that we can all find something to do for our veterans that make them smile a little more and even simply have a good day!
Thanks Dad and Bippy for all your service and work for us and our country! If it weren't for you and the people like you we would live very different lives. Hope you all have a great Veterans day!
Love, Shannon & Aaron
