We just got notice from our Discover card that our number was stolen. Discover Card has the best fraud division. The thief only started using it last night and today, in Raleigh, NC. They are investigating and we just have to get a new card account. I hope they catch the scum bags! The interesting thing is Discover is investigating how this happened because they ran up over $1000, but at places like Express and Walgreen's without showing a card - the numbers were keyed in.
I guess there was nothing we could do to prevent this. Some cards, like our Visa, only catch fraud if it is a big purchase that is suspicious - I called our Visa and that is what they told me. So be sure and check your bill carefully every month.

this just happened to us also! What they told me at Citi was that once people get your card number they can make their own card with your info on it. Luckily we were able to get our money back, but who knows if they caught whoever it was!
didn't this happen to you another time before? same state even? It happened to us once but it was only online purchases that were made. Its happened to my parents as well. It so sad how common it is now. I've heard that a lot of times your card info is stolen by the waiter at the restaurant. they take your card to go swipe it to pay the bill but while they are away, they also write down your info and sell it on the internet. I saw a news story about it. They even showed some underground website where people were buying stolen credit card info. Also in Utah and California there were gas stations where people's card info was being stolen because someone had figured out how to mess with the gas pump. So it seems that cash is turning into the best option in many cases these days.
This did happen once before. We had been in CA, stayed at some little cabins on HWY 9 toward Santa Cruz and Dad thinks that is where it was stolen. That time it was in Atlanta, GA. We think it was the travel agency in Miami, but we can't be sure because someone may have stolen it a while back and just waited to sell it. The curious thing about this one however, and why Discover is going to investigate fully, is they used it at major stores by just keying in the number instead of swiping a "remade" card.
If they were an employee of the store they could just type in the number instead of swiping it. When I worked at Mervyn's department store, I could do that with a customers card if swiping it didn't work. Also, if they produced a fake card with a nonworking bar, the employee taking the card would just type it in if it didn't work when swiped and not even notice that it was fake.
This just happened to us as well, and both Peter and I think it was from our super shady dentist's office that it got stolen. First Financial Bank said they would look into the Dentist's office to see if any other complaints had ever been issued, but I haven't heard back... Just mailed back the affidavit today, in fact, so they won't charge us for the fraudulent one. I can't believe what our world is coming to nowadays-- where is integrity?!?!
